ROBERT E. GILKA  

On June 25, 2013, Robert E. Gilka, 96, of Arlington, VA died at Sunrise Assisted Living. For 27 years he was the director of photography at National Geographic, retiring in 1985.
He was a native of Milwaukee, WI, graduated from Marquette University and served as a Captain in the Army during World War II. His journalism career began at the Zanesville, OH Signal and continued as the picture editor of the Milwaukee Journal before coming to the Geographic. His parents were Emil and Viola Gilka (deceased). He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, and is survived by two daughters, Greer and Jena Gilka; two sons, Geoffrey (Cindy) Gilka and Greg (Suzy) Gilka. He is also survived by one grandchild, Mark, and two great grandchildren, Nelson and Gwyneth.
 
Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held in the future.
