Of Warrenton, VA formally of Manassas, VA, passed away on February 5, 2013 at Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton, VA. Mr. McCann was born on May 1, 1927 in Fredonia, PA to the late Urban and Martha (Schiestle) McCann. Robert was 1 of 17 children; he had stories upon stories he loved to share with family and friends about his childhood and life experiences, and was a true joker at heart. After graduating from High School, he joined the Army Air Corps where he proudly served in WWII as a weatherman in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, loving everything and anything about the military. After WWII he was an Ocean Weather Patrol Officer for the Coast Guard sailing on the Castle Rock. Later he traveled through South America setting up Hurricane test sites. He continued his love of electronics, gadgets, technology, science and math throughout his life. He worked for NAFEC on Brigantine Island, NJ, and ended his career as an Atmospheric Scientist for NOAA, where he worked for over 30 years. Robert met the love of his life Ida and they married on May 31, 1952 where they began traveling around the world. They enjoyed fishing together in Nebraska as a young couple, and later enjoyed helping raise their granddaughters; family was everything to him. Mr. McCann attended all of his granddaughters' extra circular activities making sure he didn't miss out on anything. He was a long time member and served on the Board of Directors for many years of the Ole Virginia Ham Club (N4RL). He is preceded in death by his loving wife Ida, an infant son, his parents, 6 brothers- William McCann, Joseph McCann, John McCann, Francis McCann, Regis McCann, and Clifford McCann, and 5 sisters- Helen Marie McCann, Marie Swartz, Elinor Metelsky, Irene Reash, and Patricia Kulka. Survivors include his daughter, Noreen Carol McCann; his son, Darren Robert McCann; daughter through marriage, Carolyn McCann; granddaughters: Melissa and Shawna McCann all of Warrenton, VA, sisters Lorene Miles, of New Castle, PA, Louise McKnight and her husband Kenneth, of Sharpsville, PA, Dolores Ranelli of Sharpsville, PA, and brothers Donald McCann and Gerald McCann, both of Transfer, PA. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 15, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 271 Winchester Street, Warrenton, VA 20186. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Catholic Church. Condolences may be sent to:
