Roger Stephon Obituary

ROGER D. STEPHONMarch 25, 1937-February 14, 2013
Of Ft. Washington, MD, born in Detroit, MI to George and Mildred Stephon. Roger lived a life of service, to his country in the Navy, then as an educator and later an advocate for teachers' rights and quality education. He worked tirelessly for the Lansing Schools Education Association, the Michigan and Florida Education Associations, Overseas Education Association, and finally as a director of human & civil rights with the National Education Association in Washington, DC. He worked throughout his life for numerous human and civil rights causes, including passage of the ERA, working to end violence against children, advocating for LGBT rights, and advocating for girls' access to education throughout the world. He served his local community by supporting local farmers and promoting CSA organizations, and by his dedication to those in need, especially through the Oxon Hill Food Pantry. Roger is survived by his wife, Sandra and stepson, Michael (Anne) Delp; his four children, Chris (Debbie) Stephon, Sue Merritt, Vicki Walker and Doug (Izumi) Stephon; and their mother, Barbara; as well as six grandchildren whom he adored. We remember his keen intellect, quick wit, and love for both children and animals. I worked with Roger at the Michigan Education Association for many years. He was always a genuine person interested in any and all. Even after he retired, I received greetings at Christmas from him, even though he lived out east and I'm in MI. He was a real people person and will not be forgotten.

As we wait for serenity and understanding of God's holy will, may you be comforted to know we truly share in your loss of Roger.

Our deepest and extended sympathy, thoughts and prayers.

Lovingly and prayerfully,
