Died peacefully on June 22, 2013 after several years of declining health.
Born March 21, 1928, she was the first child of David and Lillian Silman. A Brooklyn College graduate, she received a Masters of Sociology at the University of Michigan in 1950. She married Samuel B. Garfinkel the same year, and they moved to Washington. She and Sam raised two sons, David and Phil.
After Sam's death in 1972, Roz went to the University of Maryland and earned a Masters of Social Work in 1976. She became an executive with Montgomery County Government, and retired in 1993.
All her life, Roz served as an inspiration to many. She was an active, caring listener and counselor for many. After retiring, she actively mentored Montgomery County public school students.
Roz was not religious, but she embraced Jewish cultural traditions and was a member of Beth Chai Jewish Humanist Congregation, Bethesda.
In 2009, she moved to Portland, OR. She is survived by her two sons, David and Phil.
They are holding a memorial event September 22. It will take place at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda. Information is available at:
