STEWART SARA STEVENS STEWART Sara Stevens Stewart, died on December 31, 2012 at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Virginia, from complications from Alzheimer's Disease. She was 85. Sara had been a long-time resident of Bethesda, MD, until her retirement from the Library of Congress in 1982, when she moved to Broadway, Virginia. She is survived by her three daughters and spouses; Leslie Sebers, of Linville, VA, Katy and Dave Culp, of Fairfax, VA, Sally and Phil Boucher, of Dayton, VA, and four grandchildren; Sarah Culp, Beth Culp, Nick Boucher, and Tim Boucher. Sara was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. She attended Northwestern University in Chicago, graduating with a membership in Phi Beta Kappa. At Northwestern, she met her husband, Richard A. Stewart. They married in 1948 and moved several times during the early years of his career at IBM, eventually settling in suburban DC in 1961. She later completed a Master's in Library Science from the University of Maryland, and had a successful career as a reference librarian in the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress. Sara was deeply involved in establishing the Broadway Public Library, the Plains Area Day Care Center, and was active with the Broad way Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, and was instrumental in starting the Daily Bread Food Pantry. Sara moved to the Sunnyside Retirement Community following her husband's death in 2004. Sara had a lifelong love of books and passed this passion on to her children and grandchildren. She supported many charitable and political organizations and volunteered for many years as a docent at the National Gallery of Art. She was a very loving mother and grandmother. A funeral service will be held at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Broadway on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends following the funeral service at the church. Burial will be private. There will be no viewing or visitation at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
