SELMA HURWITZ Obituary

HURWITZ SELMA HURWITZ Renowned Jewish biblical artist SELMA HURWITZ passed away peacefully on Thursday April 6, 2017. She was 89. A native of Red Bank, NJ, Mrs. Hurwitz moved to Washington in the late 1940's where she met her husband, Harold, a chemist and computer programmer, who died in 2013. The couple moved to Potomac in 1965, and raised three sons. The oldest, Mark, who passed away in 2002, was a well-known local blues musician, working under the stage name of "Lips Lackowitz." Their middle son, Seth, is the co-owner of the 9:30 Club and promotes concerts throughout the region under the I.M.P. banner. The youngest, Matt, is an accomplished entertainment journalist living in Los Angeles Inspired by her mother, an embroiderer, Mrs. Hurwitz developed her own unique art medium in 1964, after gluing a piece of her mother's metallic-wound thread onto a piece of paper to create a swan. From that, she created Had-ba-kah - Hebrew for "gluing" or adhering - made by gluing metallic wound threads of different colors onto a dark cotton-flocked museum board - essentially painting with thread. She created over 400 pieces of artwork, mostly based on Old Testament biblical stories. In addition to her sons, Matt and Seth, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Caroline Hurwitz, wife of Seth, and their three children, Joe, Sam and Fred. Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Hurwitz on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Congregation Kol Shalom, 9110 Darnestown Rd., Rockville, Maryland, with burial immediately after at B'nai Israel Cemetery in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The family will be observing Shiva with a Minyan service on Sunday night at 7 p.m. at the residence of Caroline and Seth Hurwitz. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Selma Hurwitz's name be made to The Jewish Federations. http://www.jewishfederations.org http://www.jewishfederations.org www.sagelbloomfield.com

I am sorry for your loss. God assures us he is near to those who are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. May these words give you comfort.

Dear Seth and Matt,
I was so sad to read your mom's obituary. My mom, Dorothy Clark, counted Selma and Harold as two of her closest friends. After mom died in 1989 I was glad to stay in touch with your folks and count them as friends as well. Larry and I were especially happy that they came and danced at our wedding in May 2004.
I have several prints and also an original mezuzah of Selma's that I treasure.
Sue and I recently buried our dad's ashes. Selma was responsible for his epitaph. At a party years ago she was introducing him to someone and said "This is Bob Clark. When he says 'hello' he's made a speech already. We used it on his marker.
May you be blessed with wonderful memories.
Our deepest sympathies.

Seth, Matt and families.
Your mother and our families spent many years as good neighbors and friends. It was a good time.
Please accept my sympathy for your loss and know that she will be missed by many people. I have lots of memories of her through her beautiful art work and I enjoy it all the time.
Be well and be strong.
Best wishes..Mrs. Becker

Dear Seth, Matt and Families:

We will remember your Mom for her outstanding artwork, love of her "boys" and beautiful smile. She and I shared many an afternoon together sharing coffee and cookies while the children were at school. It is hard to imagine how many cookies we consumed together over the 17 years we were neighbors in Maryland. We had such fun and shared many laughs. She will be missed.

Our deepest love, sympathy and prayers are with you at this time.
