Thaxter Swan Obituary



SWAN THAXTER SWAN Thaxter (Tack) Swan of Silver Spring, MD died October 22, 2009. He is survived by his children Lucy Swan of Olney, MD, David Swan of Purcellville, VA, Thomas Swan of Pittsburgh, PA, and Robert Swan of Portsmouth, NH. His wife of 58 years, Ruth, died in 2006. Born in Boston in 1922, he was raised in Hingham, MA. He served in the US Army, 1262nd Combat Engineers in Europe during World War II, before graduating from Harvard University in 1947. He married Ruth Baldwin Snyder in 1948 and they moved to the Washington area, where he began a career as an intelligence officer with the CIA. He and his family spent six years in Germany on two separate tours of duty; he retired in 1979. The family lived in Bethesda from 1957 until 1994 when he and Ruth moved to the Leisure World retirement community in Silver Spring. A memorial service will be held at Leisure World on November 14, 2009 at 2 p.m.; Clubhouse I, 3700 Rossmoor Blvd. Silver Spring, MD 20896. He will be buried next to his wife in Hingham, Massachusetts at a later date.
