COMMANDER, U.S. NAVY (Retired)  

Of Washington, DC, born January 17, 1940, died suddenly on August 23, 2012 at home. Youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Coonan of East St. Louis, IL. Survivors include one brother, Walter Coonan of Illinois. Tom was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. In the Navy, Tom served as the U.S. Commander-in-Chief Pacific's representative for the Southwest Pacific in Fiji. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked at the Sergeant-at-Arms Office at the House of Representatives for 17 years until his death. Visitation service on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at DeVOL FUNERAL HOME, 2222 Wisconsin Ave., NW from 6 to 8 p.m. (Parking across the street.) Funeral service with full military honors will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 9 a.m. Luncheon to follow at Key Bridge Marriott. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Greyhound Rescue, 862 Cressen Dr., Gerrardstown, WV 25420 or Georgetown University Hospital.
