FRITZ THOMAS W. FRITZ (Age 73) Thomas W. Fritz (73) a retired Navy Captain who was the Chief of Staff of Naval Intelligence in the 1990's died on September 15, 2012 from complications related to the leukemia and lymphoma that he had battled for more than 16 years. Captain Fritz, a resident of Florida since 2004, lived in the Washington, DC area from 1981 until 2004. Captain Fritz was born in Highland Park, Illinois on April 2, 1939, raised in Clearwater, Florida, and entered the Navy in May of 1957 for a career lasting 35 years. While in the Navy, he flew over 5,500 hours on intelligence collection missions. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal and Navy Achievement Medal. Upon retirement, Captain Fritz served as the County Administrator for Charles County, Maryland and was elected to political office, serving two terms as a Town Council Member in La Plata, Maryland. He also devoted himself to education and public service on men's cancer issues, volunteering countless hours and serving on the boards of a number of charitable organizations. For these efforts, he received the Meritorious Public Service Award from the Navy in 2004 and he and his wife proudly received the Charles County Spirit of Community Award in 2002. Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Jeannette Mott Fritz (Janie) of Weeki Wachee, FL; five children, his daughter Leanne Cura (Gustavo) of Tampa FL, his son Thomas Fritz (Jennifer), of Colorado Springs, CO; three step-sons, Dan Burden (Lisa) of Melbourne, Fl., Adam Burden (Allison) of Tampa, FL and Chris Burden (Christina) of Tampa FL; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his brother, Nicolas Fritz and sister, Janet Fritz Esposito, both of Clearwater, FL. His interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Captain Fritz had a motto "Never Ever Give Up"; he never did. Brewer & Sons Funeral Home/352-796-4991
