Deacon Rice was a wonderful man, and a pillar of the St. Matthew's Cathedral community. He was friendly, generous, patient and had a great sense of humor. He was one of my favorite all-time people, and I still miss him. Can't wait to see him again in Heaven.

Ulysses is still a source of inspiration as I serve my parish as a deaf vision impaired Lector using sign language as well as speech. Deacon recruited me to his Blind Awareness group showing parishes what people with disabilities can and must do for the Body of Christ to be whole. I hope some of his children and grans will take up the diaconate and follow his footsteps for long and happy marriages. Warm regards to Alma

Listening to the Gospel today´s Mass offering comfort to Alma « the Spirit of the Lord is upon me . . . to give sight to the blind » gratitude for all her sacrifices for Ulysses´s mission and ministry.

Deacon Rice opened the eyes of the Church to what persons with blindness and hearing loss CAN DO for the Church. I am forever grateful as a member of his ministry team enabling the Church to see.

I only hope Deacon Rice is still caring for the widows and orphans during this frightening pandemic. In a special way those of us with hearing loss are suffering with inability to communicate with the masked population, especially our doctors because we cannot lipread and work zoom calls are inaccessible. Our best remote captioning options are defeated by muffled voices under masks and shields. So this is a prayer for help, knocking on heaven’s door where I know you are, Ulysses, for the vision and hearing impaired and all vulnerable seniors in nursing homes and quarantined at home cutoff from family. Bless you and keep you in glory but forget not those of us on earth. Amen

He was a light to persons with disabilities for ministry in the Archdiocese providing opportunities for us to fully participate in the Church. Personally, he enabled St Matthews to become accessible for those of us with hearing loss and enabled me to be a Lector on his team making persons with disabilities Visible to the local churches. I am forever grateful for the honor of serving with him.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Mr.Rice. I knew him growing up at Nativity Church with my brother and sisters and being active with my mother and grandmother in various activities. If I remember correctly he went to elementary school with my mother. He always had a smile and kind words/

Deacon Rice loved the Lord, His church, and His people.
I witnessed that love in action through his concern for doing his best for his family and for the people of God in the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.
Deacon Rice, I thank you (and Mrs. Rice) for your wonderful family and for your many years of service to God and His people as well as for sharing your wisdom with me during our several years of working together in our respective roles at the Cathedral.

Alma,
My deepest Sympathy to you and your Family. I have known your Family all of my life, your sisters and brothers (Gibbs). Rice was such a gentle man I will never forget him, he spoke at my sister's (Valencia) and my uncle Steward's funeral which was his brother-in-law. As a kid I would look forward to seeing Alma, Rice and Jacki stopping over on the weekends. God Bless

I AM VERY SORRY TO HEAR OF DEATH. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO LOCATE REV RICE FOR SOME TIME. WE WERE IN GRADE SCHOOL TOGETHER AT ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL. I HAD NOT SEEN HIM IN OVER 10 YEARS.
I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WOULD BE A PRIEST. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. AND MAY HIS FAMILY BE BLESSED.
