VAUGHAN W. WILSON (Age 91)  

Longtime resident of Palisades neighborhood in Washington, DC on February 6, 2013, following a long illness. Born near Bristol, Tennessee, raised in nearby Fishdam, he graduated from Holston Valley High School where he was class president. Prior to WWII, he moved to Washington, DC, studied construction management and worked on building the Pentagon. He entered the Army in 1942 and was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of Captain. With the 834th Aviation Battalion for the D-Day invasion, he built many airstrips in France and Germany. After the war he worked in commercial construction, retiring from Coleman and Wood general contractors in Silver Spring, MD. He was a longtime member of the Palisades Community Church in DC. He is survived by two sons, Blake and William; daughter-in-law, Lise; and two grandsons, Samuel and Daniel. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Betty Hardin. Family will receive friends on Monday, February 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA, 22042. Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 12, at Palisades Community Church, 5200 Cathedral Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20016. Graveside ceremony will follow at place of interment, National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palisades Community Church.
