'OUSON VIVIAN VERLY REISSLAND ROUSON Vivian Verly Reissland Rouson died December 10, 2012. She was a kind and spirit-filled person who celebrated her 83rd birthday in July in St. Pete with all her adult children and nearly all grandchildren gathered. She had multiple careers and achievements, including secondary school teacher, substance abuse recovery program staff, community newspaper publisher, writer/editor, consultant, and volunteer. A Xavier University of Louisiana 1951 graduate, she taught in the Pinellas County public school system 30 years, was a columnist for The St. Petersburg Times and Evening Independent, and an instructor with Modern Media Institute, forerunner of Poynter Institute. She earned a Master's in 1979. While living in St. Pete, she was a community activist involved with the NAACP, community service organizations, Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph's, Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (serving as president). Mrs. Rouson later moved to Palm Beach County upon her husband's (Dr. W. Ervin Rouson), appointment as VP at then Palm Beach Junior College; she wrote columns for the Palm Beach Post. Since moving to Washington, DC in 1990, she has been active in church and community organizations, wrote for The Catholic Standard and the National Catholic Reporter, and served as associate editor of the National Black Media Coalition's newsletter. Also in Washington, she was a full time volunteer at the Greater Washington Urban League. Her life memberships included NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and NCNW. She was an alumnae member of The Links, Inc., Capital City Chapter. Survivors include: Lizette and Steve Benefield; Darryl and Angela Rouson; Brigette Rouson Wilson & LaMar Wilson Jr.; Janine Rouson and Clarence L. James, Jr.; Damian Rouson and Leilee Weyerhauser. Beloved grandmother to 17 and aunt to seven and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Many others regarded her as a mother and nurturer. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 15 at St. Augustine Catholic Church at 15th and V Streets NW at 1 p.m. Organizational remembrance recognitions will be from 12 noon to 1 p.m. prior to the Mass. She requested no flowers and preferred donations to the Greater Washington Urban League or the W. Ervin and Vivian Rouson Scholarship Fund at Xavier University of Louisiana.
