Bill was the friendliest and most interesting guy. I knew him from our working at the Library of Congress. Back in 2010, I said his reasearch connecting the Kennedys and the Reagans had kept me from pursuing my family back to Ireland. Since then, I have done just that and have needed to talk with Bill so many times. He was one of a kind.

I see we are 12 entries to Bill's memory. Would anyone like to share and contribute to making this guestbook permanent? I can only guess that Bill's work will be missed, but others may not know what happened until later in the upcoming year. I am willing to contribute towards the permanent guestbook ($79.99) Glynis Long [email protected]

I met Bill through my husband, Tony Bates, who got to know him in the early 1970s, when they were both working at the Library of Congress. Bill was a delightful friend, a courtly gentleman, and one of the funniest people I've ever met. I am sorry that we were not able to attend the funeral for medical reasons--I would have loved to meet the rest of his family and friends.

Dear Home and Bill's siblings, my thoughts are with you. I only knew Billy when we were kids, and in the same Sunday School classes. He was smart and nice then, and I'm glad to read that that was true of Bill the adult, too.
I think Bill(y) gave me my first bracelet ever, at my birthday party when I turned 6 or 7. Thanks, Bill(y)!

Bill Reitwiesner deserves a full obit in the Washington Post. I remember years ago, the Post did a feature article on the front page of the Style Section on Bill's prowess as a genealogist.
When asked about his job with CRS at the Library of Congress, he replied with characteristic self-effacement "I am less than dust under the wheels of their chariot."
We shall not see his like again.

Bill was a delightful character with a dry wit who always brought a smile to our faces. He was such a diligent genealogist that I have often told people that a friend at the Library of Congress (Bill, of course) once told me that the Kennedys and the Reagans were related back in Ireland. That has kept me from pursuing my Kennedy heritage in Ireland! You just trusted whatever Bill had to say about anything! He will be missed by his friends in the Library.

I worked with Bill at the Library of Congress. He was a fine person and I feel privileged to have known him.

Bill and I both volunteered on the Board of Directors for the Friday Night Dancers, a contra dance community in Glen Echo, MD. He was a gentle guide to all new board members and beginner dancers and helped the dance community in immeasurable ways. I will greatly miss his humor and friendship.

Bill was a wonderful friend who was more than enthusiastic to try new things. I will never forget ice skating with him at Pershing Ice Rink and going to the Birchmere with him to listen to The Persuasions. Ah Bill, you will be missed.

I was Bill's friend and haircutter in 1970s. We worked in CRS together. I will always remember "The Royal Hunting Horn".
He remained a scholar and a gentleman.

I am grieved at the loss of a scholar whose generosity equaled his erudition. We never met, but in correspondence with me he was courteous and helpful. His contributions to history and genealogy will be missed, even as they set a sometimes forbiddingly high standard for the rest of us to attain.
