William Bernard "Bill" Cavanaugh died peacefully on January 19, 2013, at his home in Ellicott City, Maryland, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Betsy Grater; and his four children, William "Rod", Cathleen Davis, Warren "Bud" and Bruce; and his two step-daughters, Beth Mackey and Brynn Conover. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was previously married to Marylou Walker Cavanaugh. He was a lifelong model airplane hobbyist, enthusiast, and pioneer and belonged to several model airplane clubs and national organizations. He enjoyed writing and wrote many humorous articles for club newsletters and modeling publications. He held a pilot's license and enjoyed flying gliders as well as power planes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WWII. He was 88.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, at the VFW Post, 4225 VFW Lane, in Ellicott City. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. For friends that would like to do something in his memory, the family asks that donations be made to the Baltimore Area Soaring Society, 2308 Albert Rill Road, Hampstead, MD 21074 or to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 5537 Twin Knolls Road, Suite 434, Columbia, MD 21045.
