William Irving Goewey, 87, of Falls Church, VA, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at his home. He came to Arlington, VA in the early 1960s when he was posted to the Pentagon. Mr. Goewey was a graduate of the US Naval Academy ('49) and saw action in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. His last command was DD-696, USS English. He retired from the US Navy as a Commander, worked as an engineer for Potomac Research, EDS, and Applied Technologies. He later taught Humanities at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology for nearly twenty years. He was an active member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Arlington for fifty years, serving as Senior Warden. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Lois Catherine. Survivors include his daughters, Catherine Dalton (Randy) of Lynchburg, VA, and Susan Goewey Carey (Bill) of Vienna, VA; son, David William Goewey (Sarah) of Vienna, VA; brother, Arthur Goewey of Cincinnati, Ohio and sister, Marilyn Maynard of Larchmont, NY; he had seven grandchildren. Other survivors include his nephew, The Honorable John Smith (Harriet) of Raleigh, NC, and his dear friend, Dolores Steinhauer of Raleigh, NC, and many other close family members and friends. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 19, at Everly Community Funeral Care, 6161 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22044, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, December 20, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1132 North Ivanhoe Street, Arlington, VA 22205, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the church. He will be laid to rest at Cypress Church Cemetery on Saturday, December 22, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Cypress Church, 2012 Cypress Church Road, Cameron, NC 28326, the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society, 1275 K St. NW, #1050, Washington, DC 20005, or Access Ministry of McLean Bible Church, PO Box 9300, McLean, VA 22102.
