WILLIAM W. AIRD
Lt. Col., USAF and Engineer

William Warren Aird, of Sterling, Virginia died suddenly on May 13, 2012 at the age of 89. Mr. Aird was a licensed professional engineer and a professional meteorologist. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a Communications Detachment Commander from 1943-1946 during WWII. Recalled by the Air Force in 1950, he served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in 1969 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Aird worked as Principal Engineer for Control Data Corporation and Chief Engineer for the American Institute of Architects. As president of AirdTelcom, he did consulting work with the U.S. State Department. Mr. Aird served as vice president for the National society of Professional Engineers and chairman, Environmental Policy Commission for the city of Alexandria. In later years, he became an N.S.P.E. Fellow, affiliate with George Mason University OSHER LLI, Senior member of the Civil Air Patrol and member of various Loudoun county boards. A selfless volunteer during his lifetime, he volunteered in various capacities: PTA president, Little League baseball umpire, Boy Scout volunteer, mentor, MathCounts official, science fair judge and "Uncle Sam" for the reality store program with the Loudoun county schools.
Mr. Aird was born in Manhattan, New York September 13, 1922. He attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn ('40) and UCLA ('43). In 1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Jane Green Aird. They were married 58 years when Jane died in 2003. A faithful child of God, he looked forward to his life after death and a reunion with his wife, Jane.
Survivors include his four children Linda Vretos (Constantine), William Aird (Brenda), Susan Dworkin (Seth) and James Aird (Deborah); nine grandchildren Victoria, Katherine, Joanna, John, Marshall, David, Thomas, Leslie and William; three great-grandchildren Emma, Alexander, and Natalie; and good friend, Helen Osborn.
Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 11 a.m. (meet at the Administration Building at 10:30 a.m.). The Arlington Cemetery Inurnment will be for both Lt. Col. and Mrs. William W. Aird.
