KAUFMANN JOHN W. KAUFMANN "Bill" Contracting Officer Maj. (Ret.) (Age 84) Passed away suddenly January 7, 2009 in Huntsville, AL. Bill was born in Brooklyn September 7, 1924 and served with the American Field Service and British 14th Army in Burma and in the US Army's 187th Airborne RCT and 10th Special Forces Groups in Germany and Korea with multiple decorations including the Burma Star, Purple Heart, and two Presidential Unit Citations. He later served with the Virginia Defense Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked for more than forty years as a federal purchasing and contracting manager and as a federal contractor, serving with Army Aviation Systems Command in St. Louis during the 1970s, the US Navy at the Washington Navy Yard from 1980 to 1991, and from then on with the Department of State, USDA, TAC Technologies, Systems Flow Inc., the Architect of the Capitol, the Pentagon Renovation Program, Tessada & Associates, and the Department of Transportation, finally retiring in 2005. He was a long-time member of MENSA and the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) and was known as a dedicated and enthusiastic contract law specialist who often mentored younger professionals in the field of government contract administration. He was also a bon vivant known for his wine and cheese parties. Bill lived in Alexandria and Arlington, VA from 1980 to 2005, moving then to Arizona and Alabama. He is survived by loving friends and family including Dolores S. Kaufmann, Christopher S. Kaufmann, Dr. Alison Reeves, Bonnie Damanski, Michael Damanski, and Thomas & Pamela Moore (Ashley, Rachel, Sarah, Emma, and Meagan) and many others.
