SPEARBECK EDWARD DEVER SPEARBECK Pharmacist (Age 78) On August 14, 2011 at the Capital Hospice in Arlington, VA . Beloved by family, friends and pharmacists. Ed was born in Binghamton, New York, March 5, 1933 to F. Kenneth Spearbeck and Elizabeth O'Connell Spearbeck. Ed was proud to be a lifetime Arlingtonian. Ed attended Arlington's K. W Barrett Elementry School; Thomas Jefferson, Jr. High; Washington Lee High School and George Washington University, where he received his B.S. in Pharmacy. He was a member of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Society Ed started his career as a clerk and pharmacist at the Buckingham Drug Fair in 1948 continuing with Drug Fair until finishing as the Director of Professional Services in 1987, He was also a U.S. Army Hospital Pharmacist for two years during the Korean War. Ed was the Director of Professional Services at Retired Persons Services of AARP from 1988 until 2003. He was appointed to the Virginia State Board of Health in 2004 and re-appointed in 2008. Ed was a member of The Virginia Pharmaceutical Association for many years serving on the executive board for two decades. He also served on all standing and numerous special committees. Ed has held all elected offices of the Potomac Pharmacists Association. Ed was an active member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, AMCP, ASCP, and the National Association of Retail Druggists. Ed was affiliated with the Virginia Regional Medical Planning Board, the Virginia Professional Standards Review Organization, The NAPB task force on Innovative Pharmacy, The DEA Pharmacy Committee, The NDC/UPC AdHoc Development and Implementation Committee and NACDS Pharmacy Affairs Committee as past chairman and member; Task Force Prescription and Medication Profiles; Organizing Founder of VACDS and Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Founding Trustee of NCPDP . Ed was a daily attendee at mass, starting as an altar boy and parishioner at St.Thomas More and moving to St. Ann in 1964. He was a member of the EDW Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. Eddie loved basketball all his life from his moments on the bench as a ballboy for Red Auerbach in the 1940's to attending the ACC with his friends every spring. He was an active and proficient golfer playing for the Army during the 1950's. He was a member of Washington Golf and Country Club for more than four decades. He was the #1 fan for the McDonough High School Field Hockey and Maryland State Champion Softball Teams. Ed was also the employee of the month for Hawthorne Country Club Golf Shop on numerous occasions. He was preceded in death by Loraine Cox Spearbeck, his wife of over 54 years, who died January 19, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Spearbeck Smith, and his parents, F. Kenneth and Elizabeth Spearbeck. He is survived his two sons, Ken Spearbeck of Arlington, Virginia and Ned Spearbeck, wife Jane and granddaughter, Janice Spearbeck of La Plata, MD and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington Sunday August 21 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St Ann Catholic Church, 5300 N. 10th Street, Arlington on Monday August 22 at 10 am. Interment Columbia Gardens Cemetery.
