Michael Burns, known to most as "Joe", died after a long life of 93 years. He passed peacefully at home with his wife and family beside him on March 22, 2014. He was born on November 24, 1920 in County Leitrum, Ireland, and was raised in County Fermanagh, until his departure for New York City when he was 14 years old. He served his country honorably in World War II in the Solerno Allied invasion of Italy, earning a Purple Heart. He married and had a family of four children, all while working, until retirement, for the US Post Office. He has spent his retired years in Woodbridge, VA. He loved New York City but had a special affinity for his Irish roots and had a deep connection to his Irish family and friends. He is survived by his wife Marie, his sister Dana McGowan, his four children: Kathy Burns, Peggy Nee, Joe Burns, Kevin Burns, and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 14160 Ferndale Rd, Dale City, VA.
