Dr. SUSAN M. PILCH, Ph.D. (Age 59)
Died suddenly of a heart attack at her home in Silver Spring, MD, on April 14, 2014. Sister of Sandra Cleva of Arlington, VA, Nancy Johnston of Herndon, VA, Karen Arsenault, of Haverhill, MA, and Joan Ives, of Charlotte, NC, and aunt of four nieces and two nephews.
A lifelong resident of the DC area, Susan worked at the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration as a scientist or science administrator and later at the Library of the National Institutes of Health as a biomedical informationist. Much of her work over her career focused on nutrition and cancer prevention, and she was a recipient of the Department of Health and Human Service's Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service. A graduate of the University of Virginia, she earned a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University and a Masters in Library Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her passions ranged from reading, storytelling, beading and photography to cats, cooking and Cajun dancing.
A celebration of Susan's life will be held in room 103 of the parish center at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Arlington, VA, on Saturday, May 3, at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan's honor to the Washington Humane Society or the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
