Margaret passed away on June 1, 2014 at her home in Alexandria, surrounded by her loving family, and after a courageous battle with ALS. Born in Scipio Center, NY, she earned her degree in Political Science from Georgetown University and moved to Alexandria, VA over 30 years ago. Margaret devoted most of her life to children, serving as teacher and co-director at Resurrection Children's Center in Alexandria and also as Children's Docent at Phillips Collection in Washington DC. She was an avid gardener who took pride in her roses and peonies, was exceptionally outgoing and kind, and was greatly loved by all that knew her. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, J. Brian Sharkey; children, Ali (Eric) Goldwater and Patrick Sharkey; grandchildren, Charlotte and Parker Goldwater; brothers, Paul (Karin) and Mark Driscoll; nieces and nephews, Nate, Maggie, and Jake Driscoll and Kara (John) Miller. She also leaves her step-daughter, Adria (Scott) Fulton; step-grandchildren, Justin, Olivia, Hannah, and Luke Gellar.
Family and friends may gather on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 711 N. Columbus St. Alexandria, VA 22314. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Resurrection Children's Center, 2280 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311. A guest register may be found at
