PATRICIA W. SMITH

Patricia Ann Walden Smith passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. "Pat" was the daughter of Richard E. Walden and Ilene A. Walden of Comus, Maryland. She was born March 17, 1946 in Washington, DC. Pat graduated from Poolesville High School and then completed a Bachelor of Science from at Memphis State University. It was in Memphis that Pat began her career with the Department of Veterans Affairs. After returning to her home in Maryland, Pat continued her career with the Department where she met and married her husband Andrew B. Smith. Her career in the Office of Human Resource Management lasted for 32 years until her retirement in 1999. She was a dedicated public servant. Pat and Andy celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary this year. Pat and Andy traveled extensively until a long battle with heart disease led to a transplant in 2007. The family is grateful for the additional seven years of life she was granted.
Pat is survived by her beloved husband Andy, her children Mark Smith and his wife Amanda, Richard Smith and Mary Lynch, David Smith and Robert Smith. Pat was so proud of her grandsons Alex and Mark Smith. She is also survived by her brother Mike Walden of Jonesboro, Arkansas, sister-in-law Debra Walden and her nieces Leigh Walden Kirkpatrick and Erin Walden Moore, their husbands and their children.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors of the Shady Grove Hospital Emergency Department and the 4th Floor ICU team at George Washington University Hospital for the compassionate care provided for Pat and her family.
