Was born on June 12, 1947 at Alexandria Hospital to Ezra Brown Dunn of Albemarle, Virginia and Annette Beaulieu of Fall River, Massachusetts.A lifelong resident of her beloved Virginia, Joyce grew up in Dumfries and graduated from Garfield High School in 1965. In 1967 Joyce married John W. Leonard, Jr of Beaver Falls, PA and in 1974 they made their home in Haymarket. She was employed by the Prince William County School Board for 34 years; she worked at the Administrative Building along with several lifelong friends, and retired as Executive Secretary to Director of Personnel. Joyce was also the first female President of Evergreen VFD and elected Associate Member of the Year in 1988. Joyce was an avid genealogical researcher and spent many years compiling extensive history of her lineage; she was proud to say that she was a 14th generation Virginian on her father's side. During her retirement, she spent most her free time 'playing' in her yard, doting on her grandchildren, and enjoyed two memorable trips, one to Alaska and one to Hawaii.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, John, and their three children Michelle Himel of Wasilla, Alaska, Jennifer Buchanan of Winchester, and Meghan Leonard of Fredericksburg as well as six beloved grandchildren: John Hunnings, Jacob Hunnings, and Lauren Hunnings of Wasilla, Alaska; Bethanie and Braeden Powers of Winchester; and Christopher Leonard of Fredericksburg; and two great-grandchildren, Brice Stoltze and Alyssa Hunnings of Wasilla, Alaska. She is survived also by two loving sisters and one nephew, Dee Dunn Papa of Punta Gorda, Florida and Carole J. and Jonathan Dunn of Manassas. Joyce was preceded in death by her son, John William Leonard III, and her granddaughter, Breanna Nichole Powers.
Joyce passed away peacefully in her home on July 12, 2014 surrounded by loved ones after a short battle with cancer. Arrangements are made with Pierce Funeral Home, Manassas.
