KATHERINE KNIGHT LUJACK "Katie"
On Saturday, August 2, 2014, Katherine "Katie" Knight Lujack of Bethesda, MD died quietly at Suburban Hospital of natural causes. Predeceased by her husband, "Big Al" Lujack, in 2002, she is survived Andy McKenna of Annapolis, Katherine Goodhue of Gaithersburg, Susan Tinsley of Bethany, Delaware, Jocelyn Burgess of Mt. Airy, Christine O'Connell of Silver Spring, and Roberta Buchanan of Fredrick; twelve grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.
While growing up in the Philippines, she won numerous awards in riding competitions.
After a year at Skidmore College, she met her husband during World War II at Fort Benning, Georgia while working in the infirmary as a volunteer nurses' aide. They had a passionate love affair for fifty-seven years.
She was actively involved in the Girl Scouts of America, and in 1976 she received the highest award in scouting, the World Pin. An active member of the Edgemoor Club for over half a century, she was captain of tennis teams, and a starter and judge at swim meets. She was an avid reader and world class story teller and Scrabble player and card player beating her children and grandchildren at every opportunity. She loved the beach especially on the Delmarva Peninsula and traveling.
A memorial service will be held at Pumphrey Funeral Home, 7557 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda MD, Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 10 a.m. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Girl Scouts of America and Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad.
