THORA WAINWRIGHT

Thora Wainwright peacefully passed at the age of 82 on Saturday, August 2, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 17, 1932 to John C. and Chrissie M. McLean, who predeceased her, as did her two sisters and her brother. Thora attended Brigham Young University. She married the late Jim Smead in 1953 and accompanied him to Belgium, France and England where she was active in her children's activities, participated in many cultural activities, and pursued her interests in art and history. Thora's marriage to Jim ended in divorce. Later, she married Ralph Wainwright in 1978 and accompanied him from Michigan, to California, and finally to Texas where he predeceased her in 1986. Thora retired to Virginia in 1998 to be near her children and grandchildren.
Family and service to others were Thora's passion, pride and joy. Thora will be remembered for her wry sense of humor where her dry and insightful quips and comments would instruct and inspire family and friends.
Thora is survived by her two daughters, Ellen Smead (Walt Sanders), and Jan King (Craig King) and her son, Jim Smead (Terri Gero Smead); her grandchildren Ryan King (Laura), Michelle Kirshenbaum (Steve Kirshenbaum), Jennifer King, Emily Sanders, Melissa Sanders and Steven Smead; great grandchildren Kylie King, Wesley King, Rebecca King, William King and Braden Kirshenbaum; her sisters-in-law; cousins; and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, August 6 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Belmont Ridge Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 21015 Claiborne Parkway, Ashburn, VA. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 7 at the same location, with the internment following immediately at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA. Flowers may be sent to the Pierce Funeral Home 9609 Center Street, Manassas, VA 20110 (703)257-6028.
