DOROTHY JEWEL HARPER PARKER
Formerly of Capitol Heights, MD, died August 20, 2014 at Spring Hills Assisted Living, Alexandria, VA where she had resided for two years. She was the widow of Marion E. Parker.
Dorothy, one of 12 children, was born October 24, 1916 to Theodore and Mary Harper in Spiro, Kentucky. As a young woman, she came to the DC area to visit relatives, met her husband, and lived in the Capitol Heights area until age 95. She was active and loyal to the First Baptist Church of Capitol Heights serving in many roles including Sunday School teacher, Deaconess, and the Women's Missionary Union. She was employed for many years at Lansburgh's Department Store in DC. Dorothy then worked for PEPCO and retired at age 70 after more than 20 years of service to the utility and its customers. She loved to travel, especially cruises and trips to Florida and Hawaii. Ocean City, MD was another favorite vacation spot, and she and her grandchildren spent many hours searching for the perfect seashells.
Mrs. Parker is survived by her daughters, Mary Schramm (Harold), Brenda Parker (Edgar Lee); grandchildren, Michael Schramm (MaryJo), Elaina Schramm, Marsha Stauffer (Dino), Jason Lee and Travis Lee; great-grandchildren Christopher Schramm, Harrison Schramm and Sarah Lekas; great-great-grandchildren Oaklee, Ivy Grace and Liam; siblings Martha Jane Ferguson, Myrtle Anne Holmes (Charles) and Donald Keith Harper; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held Monday, August 25, at 1 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, VA. A viewing for family and friends will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 24. Interment private.
