ELIZABETH BROWDER NIBLEY "Betty"  
Passed peacefully in her sleep at Walter Reed National Medical Center at age 86, on Saturday, March 5, 2016, after a year and half long battle with cancer. She is in our hearts and in our thoughts. Betty was born on September 16, 1929 in Washington, DC. The daughter of a career Naval Officer, she moved around the country and was at Pearl Harbor, as a teenage girl, when the Japanese bombs were dropped. It was in the fifth grade that she met her future husband Owen Smoot "Pete" Nibley. She moved to Honolulu and didn''t meet up with Pete until years later, when he was attending West Point and she was enrolled at Sweetbriar College. They were married for 32 years before he passed away on May 10, 1982. A graduate of Holton-Arms School, Betty later received her Bachelor''s degree from George Washinton University and her Master''s degree from the University of Maryland. For many years, she was librarian at St. Alban''s School, George Washington University and American University, where she became a tenured professor. Betty is survived by her three sons, Andrew, Stuart and Peter; three daughters-in-law, Kelly, Elizabeth and Mary Beth; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Stoddert, Pearson, Stuart, Gower, Leath, Suzanne and Stafford; aunt Frances Selden; cousins, Nancy Hammond and Joe Selden; sister-in-law, Jeremy Fitzgerald. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 11, at Knollwood Military Retirement Residence at 2 p.m for Knollwood residents and family only. A memorial service for other friends will be held at a future date. Services by Devol.
