Alison Macdonald Obituary

MACDONALD ALISON BAIRD MACDONALD ALISON BAIRD MACDONALD (MCLAIN), 36, died on June 17, 2009, of complications from an unidentified blood clotting disorder. Over the course of four months of hospitalization, numerous procedures and surgeries, and with the knowledge that her illness could claim her life at any moment, Alison retained her unique and beautiful balance of optimism, intelligence, sophisticated wit, and love for her family. Alison grew up in Michigan, New Hampshire and England. She was in the first class of women to attend Deerfield Academy, and was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the University of Michigan Law School. Since 2000, Alison worked, was married, and lived in DC. Alison despised superfluous adjectives. Accordingly, she was: the wife of George Robert McLain, Jr., mother of Stewart Porter McLain, daughter of Malcolm and the late Abby Macdonald, and sister of Eleanor Macdonald. We all loved her. A memorial gathering will be held in her honor on Saturday, June 27. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to Bryn Mawr College in memory of Alison Baird Macdonald. In tribute,

I didn't know her, and I barely knew Rob from school. But the few times I had the good fortune to hear Rob speak of his wife and son, his beaming face always struck me in how totally loving and affectionate it was. Perhaps that's why even someone so peripherally in touch with her life as myself broke into tears when I heard. I am so, so sorry, and I wish I could have known her better.
