CRUZ HUMBERTO MOORE CRUZ "Beto" On Saturday, December 19, 2009. Born in Tucson, AZ and grew up in Burke, VA, currently residing in Midlothian, VA. Loving son of Ron and Jane Cruz; supportive brother of Elida M. Cruz and brother-in-law of Jeremy Villano of New York. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 12 noon at Burke Presbyterian Church, 5690 Oak Leather Dr, Burke, VA 22015 with private interment at Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hampshire College c/o Music Department at hampshire.edu www.fmfh.com

Although I did not work with him in the classroom, I had the pleasure of meeting him at various social functions. I have known Beto since he and Alex became friends freshman year at Lake Braddock High School. I will always think of him as he was in those years--quiet, friendly, into music in a big way and a good friend to my son Alex. I met Beto through my brother Alex while they were close friends during high school, college, New York, and beyond. Although I didn't live in the area so only saw Beto now and then on family visits, I liked him tremendously and am terribly sad to hear the world is without him. He struck me as a deeply kind, sensitive, gentle person with humour, intelligence and an artistic soul who was passionate about music. It made me feel happy to know my brother was good friends with such a person, and I know my parents were fond of Beto also. Beto was an undergraduate at Hampshire College where I have taught Music for over twenty years. In my many years of teaching, I have encountered very students of
Beto’s caliber: he was bright, talented, sensitive, and engaged in the activities of the Music Program. He did this in an extraordinarily consistent and even modest way, given his abilities. He was a terrific guitarist and a wonderful person. News of his untimely death grieves me deeply.
I want to extend my condolences on behalf of myself, my family, my musical colleagues, and the College to his family and to all his friends. I send this with great respect and affection.
