Lindsey Harmon Obituary



HARMON LINDSEY R. HARMON Lindsey Richard Harmon died June 7, 2010, in his residence at Goodwin House, Falls Church, VA. He was 96 years old and died in his sleep. He lived most of his life in Arlington, VA, where he was active in community affairs, education and politics. He was an early activist in Arlingtonians for a Better Community, a non-partisan political party which fought for better schools and supported racial integration of Arlington''s schools. He was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Church and was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington since 1950. Lindsey was born March 22, 1914, in Spokane, WA. His family lived in Fargo, ND and South St. Paul, MN, where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he later earned a Ph.D. in psychology. He worked for the Veterans Administration in Minneapolis, and moved to Arlington in 1950. He was a research psychologist for the Department of the Army and then was a research director at the National Research Council of the National Academies of Science, from which he retired. Working for the Army, he worked on developing criteria for selection of candidates for Officer Candidate School. At the NRC he developed criteria for predicting success of candidates for National Science Foundation fellowships. Lindsey taught Sunday school for many years at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, where he also served on several committees. His marriage to Janet Bruce Burwell Harmon ended in divorce. His wife Eloise Goode Harmon died in 2006. He is survived by three of his children, Bruce Hamilton of Arlington, Joan Harmon Evans of Terra Alta, WV and Douglas Lindsey of Arlington. His son, William Reed died in 1978. Also survived by his sister, Lois Harmon Prentice of Osprey, FL; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service for residents of Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads will be held June 16 in the chapel.
