Phil Jordan Obituary

JORDAN PHIL WINBURN JORDAN (Age 96) Formerly of Bethesda, MD, died May 24, 2010 peacefully at his home in Stuart, Florida. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a true southern gentleman, devoted to his family, God and country, and an avid tennis player. He was a dedicated public servant who worked for the federal government for 36 years, retiring in 1970 from his position as Assistant Director of the Secret Service. He had been recruited, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to establish an Office of Administration to strengthen the Secret Service''s administrative functions. Previously, he worked for the Department of Agriculture, the Office of Emergency Management, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, War Assets Administration, and the General Services Administration. He told a young interviewer last year that in his view, "it is a high profession and privilege to serve the public". He attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the George Washington University in 1963. Following his retirement from government, he practiced law for eight years in Washington, DC. During this time, he and three other distinguished lawyers founded the International School of Law (ISL) with the intent of training lawyers dedicated to the moral practice of law. In 1980, ISL became the George Mason School of Law. Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret "Peggy" Jordan, who died in 2004. Survivors include his daughter, Dorothy Jordan (John King) Rayburn of Washington, DC; his son, Phil W. (Jean M.) Jordan, Jr. of Springfield, Virginia; five grandchildren, Anne Marie (Jeff) Teter, Courtney Jordan, Phil W. (Jill) Jordan, III, John King Rayburn, Jr. and Chrystine Jordan Rayburn; and two great-grandchildren. The family invites friends and colleagues to a celebration of Mr. Jordan''s life on Monday, June 28, 11 a.m. at the National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC. A reception will follow at the church. Contributions may be made in Mr. Jordan''s honor to World Vision or Young Life of Fairfax, VA. Please sign our guestbook at: www.aycockfuneralhome.net
