Vernon Dean Kirkpatrick of Silver Spring, MD died peacefully on November 5, 2010 at the age of 88. Beloved husband of Lucille Tipple Kirkpatrick for 64 years, he is also survived by his children, David (Kathrine), Tom (Sherrie), Janet (Scott) Bartelt and Karen (John) Perkner; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his brothers, Robert, Neal, Donald and Wendell; as well as many nieces, nephews and their children. Vernon played oboe and English horn in the National Symphony Orchestra for 45 years until his retirement in 1990. During that time, he took hundreds of candid photographs from his unique vantage point on stage of nearly every conductor and soloist who came to town. His pictures have been exhibited at museums in Bethesda and Hagerstown, MD at the Kennedy Center and published in The Washington Post.
A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 9701 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 11, 2010.
