MARK RICHARD ALLEN  

On January 14, 2011, in the arms of his wife at his home in Alexandria, VA, after a year-long battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Born December 27, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, to David Hector and Ruth Isabel (Chilton) Allen. Survived by his wife, Juanita Elisabeth (Wright) Allen, son Aaron David Allen of Annapolis, MD, daughter Emily Lynn (Allen) Goodman of Fairfax, VA, granddaughter Avery Lynn Allen of Annapolis, MD, and brother Bruce David Allen of Del Haven, NJ. He retired in August 2010 as the Horticulturist/Arborist for the Town of Vienna, VA. From 1979 to 1989 he was head of Gardens and Grounds at George Washington's Mt. Vernon Estate. He was an avid birder and naturalist, keeping meticulous journals since 1977 with his keen observations on wildlife, trees, flowers, and wetlands from his many trips throughout the U.S. and overseas. He was a voracious reader and a deep and introspective thinker. Throughout his life, he exhibited great integrity, high morals, unfailing fairness, a strong work ethic, and an iron will. Funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on January 21 (visitation at 6:00 p.m.) at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church, 8523 Ft. Hunt Road, Alexandria, VA. Burial will follow on January 22 at Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery in Cape May County, NJ. Arrangements by Jefferson Funeral Chapel of Alexandria, VA.
