PERKINS HELEN L. PERKINS (Age 95) On Tuesday, February 15, 2011 of Silver Spring, MD. Helen L. Perkins was born in Lenox, IA, in 1915 and lived there until she was three years old and travelled to Grand Island, NE, in 1918 by covered wagon. She completed grade school and high school and made many friends she kept in touch with all her life. She married the love of her life in 1935 in Grand Island where they loved dancing to Lawrence Welk's music. Mrs. Perkins and her husband, DeWight D. Perkins, transferred to Washington, DC, in 1936, moved to Wind Cave National Park, SD in 1938, transferred to Denver, CO, in 1940, where they had many lovely friends from the Trinity Methodist Church, and in 1950 moved to Winslow, AZ, where Mrs. Perkins became the Secretary to the Principal of Winslow High School. In 1956 they had the wonderful opportunity to move back to Washington, DC, where she held the position of Secretary to the Pastor of Takoma Park Presbyterian Church and also held the positions of Secretary to Superintendent of the Rock Creek Nature Center, National Park Service, and then transferred to the Deputy Director's Office, National Capital Parks from where she retired in 1972. Mrs. Perkins and her husband moved to Leisure World Retirement Community in Silver Spring, MD in 1972 where she loved china painting, Leisure World Choralettes Singing Group, Interfaith Chapel Bible Study, Leisure World Hospitality Committee, enjoyed her many grandchildren and took pride in growing African violets, plus spending time with her different poodles. Mrs. Perkins is survived by her four children, Barbara Amazeen from Chandler, AZ, Dixie Kanagy from Gaithersburg, MD, Shirley Weaver from Montgomery Village, MD and DeWight Perkins, Jr. from Mt. Airy, MD, and sister, Carrol Eveland from Grand Island, NE and brother, Dale DeyErmand from Grand Island, NE, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great- grandchildren. The memorial service will be held on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Interfaith Chapel in Leisure World, 3680 S. Leisure World Blvd., Silver Spring, MD.
