Dr. Ubelhart and his wife Mary Pat established their home in Northern Virginia in 1973, where they raised their three children: Rick, Kevin, and Kara. He helped build Alexandria Orthopaedic Associates and subsequently joined Commonwealth Orthopaedics in 1999. He practiced and performed general orthopedic and trauma surgery for almost 40 years. Dr. Ubelhart served as a surgeon in the United States Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding service. Born in Louisville, KY, Dr. Ubelhart graduated from Trinity High School and the University of Notre Dame, majoring in business. He went on to earn a medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and did his residency in orthopedic surgery at the National Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Arlington, VA. Dr. Ubelhart had a widely known reputation for compassionate care and the sanctity of human life was the guiding principle of his medical career. In his spare time, he was an avid photographer.
