LAYNE ELIZABETH STEPHAN LAYNE (Age 80) "Betty" Of Dumfries, VA died at her home on November 19, 2011. Betty was born May 3, 1931 to the late Harold and Hazel Stephan. She grew up primarily in Arlington, VA. Betty attended the College of William & Mary, where she met her future husband, Donald Q Layne. She is survived by her husband, Col. Donald Q. Layne, USMC Ret. whom she married on August 14, 1951; and her three daughters, Karen Layne Norton, Geri Layne Craddock, and Becky Layne O'Reilly. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren: Elizabeth, Layne, Will and Caitlin Norton; Katherine Dials; and Clare, Bridget, and Cece O'Reilly. After accompanying her husband on those of his military tours of duty located in North Carolina, Massachusetts, Virginia and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, her family settled in Woodbridge, VA. Betty was very proud of starting the first Girl Scout troop in Haiti, while she was living there." In addition to being the wife of a Marine Corps officer and raising three daughters, Betty also began teaching at Marumsco Hills Elementary School in 1964. For twelve years, Betty taught while also attending school at George Mason University. In 1977, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Elementary Education. Many of Betty's former students refer to her as "the best teacher I ever had" and have commented," I learned more in her 3rd grade class than in the rest of my school years." Since then, Betty and Don have travelled to Egypt, Israel, Italy, and Germany. She was a member of the Lions Club for many years and worked as an Election official. The family will receive friends at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City VA 22193 on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. A life celebration service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, November 25, 2011 at 12 noon. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery. The family has suggested a donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203 or Capital Caring, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, VA 22042.
