KIM CALVIN Obituary


KIM J. CALVIN  
Kim Jonathan Calvin, 76, of Arlington, died suddenly January 10, 2012, at his home. Mr. Calvin was born August 24, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Glenn Howard Calvin and Kathryne (Wetzel) Calvin, and had lived in Arlington for over 40 years. The devoted husband of the late Juanita "Nita" Zella Calvin, he was the 1949 winner of the National Spelling Bee, a 1957 graduate of the University of Rochester School of Engineering, a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy, and a much-honored mechanical engineer for the U.S. Navy, working on noise and vibration engineering for submarines in the Bureau of Ships until his retirement in October, 1991. An active member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, he also belonged to the Mercedes-Benz Club of America; he was a devotee of opera and classical and military music, an ardent Democrat, and a doting friend to the many cats with whom he and Nita shared their home over the years. Mr. Calvin was predeceased by his wife and by his two brothers, John Norman Calvin and Glenn Howard Calvin, Jr., and his two sisters, Kathi M'lisse Calvin and Joan Patricia Calvin. He is survived by a niece, Lucy Calvin Skeldon, of Wakefield, MA; a nephew, Nathaniel Glenn Calvin, of Sunnyvale, CA; a sister-in-law, Marcia Loomis Calvin of Wakefield; a grand-niece, and two grand-nephews.A private service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.
