ROBERT G. ROLFE
Of Olney, MD, devoted father of Martha LeGrand of Gaithersburg and Andrew Rolfe of East Dundee, IL, passed away April 30, 2012, at Brooke Grove Nursing Center in Sandy Spring. He was 90. He was married for 59 years to his beloved wife, Clarice E. Rolfe, who died April 5, 2012.
He was born December 24, 1921, in Syracuse, NY, to the late Leon G. and Harriet B. Rolfe. During World War II
he served as a radar technician with the U.S. Marine Corps
' 11th Defense Battalion, 3rd Amphibious Corps in the Pacific and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY, with a B.S. in physics.
After moving to Washington, he worked for more than 30 years at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, retiring in 1979. As a senior engineer in the Underwater Electrical Engineering Department, he helped design and test sonar defense systems for the Navy.
Like his father, he was a watchmaker. He belonged to the Washington and Maryland chapters of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors and for 20 years volunteered at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History, helping catalogue its watch collections. He also belonged to the Sandwich Chapter of the National American Glass Club.
In addition to his two children, a grandson, Nigel Rolfe, of East Dundee, IL, survives him. Friends are invited to celebrate the lives of Robert and Clarice on May 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sandy Spring Museum in Sandy Spring.
