FRED BEGUN Obituary

BEGUN FRED BEGUN Fred Begun, was principal timpanist with the National Symphony Orchestra for 48 years until his retirement in 1999. He was 84 and died September 23 in Washington, DC. Fred was a world-class percussionist with a flair that set him apart. He didn't just bang the drums, he slid and swirled around them as he performed in such fashion that he might also have qualified as the symphony's unofficial principal dancer. A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Fred came to Washington with his family in 1936 at age eight. Soon afterward, he got to know a couple of prominent jazz drummers and that was it for life: Fred Begun was a drummer. He played with bands in local DC night clubs as a teenager and went on to receive a master's degree in music from the Julliard School of Music. Fred never missed a beat: soon after graduation he successfully auditioned for the NSO's timpanist position. It was conducted anonymously behind screens such that those making judgment wouldn't have seen that he was barely more than a kid So he started out at the top and continued to rise. Fred was passionate, meticulous and gracious. He wore ascots. He wore tuxedoes so often and so easily they were as comfortable as painter's overalls (his father Israel Begun was a painting contractor.) Over the years, Fred played under the batons of (mostly last names, for the cognoscenti):Barbirolli, Dorati, Fiedler, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Gould, Leinsdorf, Mitchell, Reiner, Rostropovich, Slatkin, Steinberg, Stokowski, Stranvinski, Mazel and Leonard Bernstein. Fred gave four world permiere concerto performances for timpani with the NSO and authored the book "21 Etudes for Timpani," which is used in music conservatories worldwide. Earlier this year he was honored with the creation of the Fred Begun Percussion Suite at George Mason University, a rehearsal room that houses his music library, his scores and his writings. Fred is survived his daughters, Julie Begun of Bethesda and Rosalie Begun of Alexandria; brother Eugene Begun of Silver Spring and Fred's companion Jane Bonin of Washington DC. His marriage to Clair Berger Begun (mother of his daughters) ended with her death in 1990. Clair had been a high school friend whom he re-met several years later. He later married Marion Williams of Bethesda , who died in 1999. A funeral service will be held at Danzansky-Goldberg memorial chapel, 1170 Rockville Pike Rockville MD 20852 on September 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, MD. Charitable donations can be made to the Fred Begun Percussion Suite. Charitable donations can be made to the Fred Begun Percussion Suite.

To the Begun Family my deepest sympathy on the loss of this icon.
As a student of the segregated schools of the District of Columbia it was a real treat to attend a free concert of the National Symphony Orchestra at Constitution Hall. I am now 70 years old and I can vividly remember being mesmerized as Fred demonstrated the workings of his instrument. He is the only one I can remember. Right up to the time he retired I looked for him to perform with the same vitality and passion he did the first time I saw him. I was never disappointed. His legacy will last forever.

Several of my classmates from National Cathedral School would go into the Cathedral after school and watch Mr. Begun practice for a concert that was going to be performed later in the evening. We were 13 years old, so that made him 26 at the time. He was very young and handsome and attracted us. He would bend down and put one ear close to the top of the drum and gently and silently tap and then turn the handles holding the skin on the drum. We were smitten and fascinated. I saw him about 5 years ago playing at an Easter service and was able to catch up to him and tell him how much he thrilled 5 or 6 young girls from school. I am now 71, and the memory of him practicing has always stayed with me. Ann W. C. - class of '59/NCS

Dearest Jane,
Julian and I wish to convey our deepest sympathy for your loss. You and he taught us love in ways that changed our own lives. I loved watching Freddy play timpany with the NSO. More, however, I loved his eyes as they sparkled in love for you. With deepest gratitude for his gift of music and love.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Fred Begun. I did not know Fred, but my late husband Dennis Martin worked with him in many concerts with the Paul Hill Chorale/Master Chorale of Washington, and I had the pleasure of seeing Fred perform. He was a delight to watch.

Rosalie & Julie - I was saddened to hear of your father's passing. Over the years, I've met many musicians and when I mentioned his name, each of them smiled and talked about his incredible talent and passion. I still cherish the time he took all of us to the Kennedy Center to see Andre Watts perform and to meet him back stage. The mutual respect of two incredibly talented musicians was obvious to anyone who saw them together that night.

I was proud to be a student and friend of Freddie's. Even though it was only a year, I felt like it was many years of study. Every detail of instruction would be immediately understood. That is how excellent a teacher he was. And he was even more exciting to listen to and watch play. I will never forget his invitations to come backstage after Kennedy Center concerts to discuss the evenings' concert and what I thought of his interpretation and the music in general.
