MYRON ERKILETIAN Obituary

ERKILETIAN MYRON P. ERKILETIAN "Mike" Myron "Mike" Parsek Erkiletian a beloved father who lead a full and colorful life, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 21, 2012. He was surrounded by loving family and friends with his favorite Louis Armstrong music playing in the background. Mike Erkiletian, son of Parsek and Lucy Erkiletian of Armenian heritage, who migrated from Turkey, was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 4, 1936. He went to Kelvin High School and was president of his senior class, involved with the Civic Forum and the National Honor Society. He continued on to earn an undergraduate B.S. C.E. Degree at Purdue University and then went on to earn a Master's in Business Administration at Columbia University. After graduating, Mike moved to the Metropolitan DC area to start his career in Real Estate Development. One of his first experiences in the real estate industry was as an Assistant Project Manager of the Watergate Complex. In the late 1960's, Mike established a successful real estate development company which won numerous awards over the years and still operates today under the Erkiletian name. Throughout his career Mike was responsible for developing and constructing numerous and significant office and luxury apartment projects throughout the region. Mike was a man of strong character, integrity, conviction and intense generosity. A man who was always striving to better his community. Early on, and throughout his life, he was intensely involved civically, politically and charitably. In fact, Mike made an intense commitment to anything that he cared about. He was truly a leader who believed strongly in giving back to his community. As a man he was very proud of his heritage and was involved with the Armenian community throughout his life. During one of his trips to Armenia, Mike was so moved by the people he met that he founded and supported both a Kindergarten and a Charitable Soup Kitchen for the elderly in Dilijan, Armenia in memory of his late Mother Lusaber "Lucy'' Erkiletian. In addition to his heavy involvement in industry, community and charitable endeavors, Mike had other passions too. He loved this time of year and surrounded his life with gusto for bird hunting, opera, skiing and a love of his Chicago Bears. He was a world traveler and history buff too and at the end of the day he would follow it up with a fine scotch, a good steak and a great cigar. Mike was a legacy, his enthusiasm and love for his family had no bounds and he is a man who will never be forgotten. We love you Dad. Myron "Mike" Parsek Erkiletian is survived by his children Stefanie Erkiletian, Michael Erkiletian, Alex Erkiletian, Mihran Erkiletian, and Samuel Erkiletian; his stepchildren Jennifer Coombs, Leslie Coombs, Kim Sakellis, Aaron Lager, and Jessica Lager; his sisters Margaret Erkiletian Carlson (Herb Carlson), Jaqueline Erkiletian Goodrich (Danny Goodrich), and Beatrice Erkiletian Coppini (Paolo Coppini); his grandchildren Ethan Erkiletian, Sion Erkiletian, Maximus Erkiletian, and Aristotle Erkiletian; niece and nephews, Peter Carlson, Caroline Carlson Smith, Herb Carlson, Greg Goodrich, Jimmy Goodrich, and Giampaolo Coppini (Cameron Coppini); as well as Indira Aslan (Betty Erkiletian), Josephine Erkiletian, and Lynda Erkiletian MPE July 4, 1936 - October 21, 2012 To All of the Friends and Loved Ones of Myron P. Mike (I call him Merun...roll the letter "R") was my cousin. Last I saw him I was about 21 years old...and he was about 17 or so. I was an airline stewardess with Eastern Airlines at that time and I would drop in as often as I felt...and spend the night unannounced any time with his family. His mom Lucy, sister Margaret, and baby sister Beatress , they always treated me like I was someone very special. I am 92 years old now and have lost track of these wonderful relatives. I happen to run across this obit quite by accident. If any of Myron's family reads this...please contact me at 704 483 5815...I would love to renew my friendship and catch up.. I married and live in North Carolina....however, my memories of the Erkeletians and their hospitalities is still vivid. Thanks, Margie Kalashian Crunkleton

I am so sad and my heart is heavy to hear of Mike's passing. He was a dear friend and whenever I see a flock of geese flying overhead I think of him and how he gave me lessons on how to handle a shot gun at his beloved "Rolles Range." He was definitely a man's man and a gentleman. Mike made a lasting impression on those he knew and met. He will be dearly missed by many but his legacy and memories will live on. To Mike's family, I am sorry for your loss!

Stephanie, I am so sorry for you and your family. I just heard today about your Dad. It was obvious how close your relationship was with your Dad. I know personally from the many times he talked about you to Bob and I that he adored you and you were his pride and joy. It's so hard to lose people we love. I lost my Dad and we were very close like you and your father. Your love for him will keep him close in your heart. I lost my Dad and Bob just three weeks apart January of 2004. Now Mike and Bob are together and probably working on a budget. Stephanie my email is [email protected]. Drop me a line I would love to hear from you. I will look and see if I have some pictures from our trip to Jerusalem and if so will get you copies. Hugs sweetie, Nancy

I got to know Mike first as a member of the Alexandria City Council and later as a member of the Virginia State Senate. Mike was that rare public citizen who cared about the City where he did several developments and the State at large. and did not shy from speaking his mind about public needs. In particular, he was a leader in advocating better transportation planning and funding. He not afraid of raising taxes for this purpose This was part of his "full and colorful life" and I will miss him.

May the wind be always at your back.

Albert Todd Executive Director, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay

November 9, 2012

The Board and Staff of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay express our sincere condolences to Mr. Erkiletian's family and friends. It is clear that Mr. Erkiletian had a real passion for life and embraced his family, his faith and his community with that same passion.

Mike Erkiletian donated his time and expertise to the Alliance, serving on its Board, and approached his business with sensitivity to the environment that was noteworthy. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is grateful that Mr. Erkiletian and his family chose us for memorial donations and we thank all who have shared with us their memories of Mr. Erkiletian and who have generously donated to the Alliance.

We will continue to do our best to honor Mr. Erkiletian's memory by continuing our work of Chesapeake Bay restoration through programs that engage communities throughout the watershed to heal the land and be stewards of their local rivers and streams.

November 8, 2012

At the end of the Robb Administration I was worried about my next job...what would I do that I like as much as this? Out of the blue, my friend Mike called me about something different, but I soon brought him into my confidence...."what am I going to do?" I asked Mike. He said "...let me share an old Armeanian Provberb with you Laurie.....I responded, Mike, I need a job not a provberb...He cotinued "....how do you find your way to Jerusalem?...You ASK!" He said...go ahead, ask...what do you want to do? All they can do is tell you 'no'..then go on with the next job wish.." I have repeated this 1000 times, I have re-run this conversation in my mind one-million times. This conversation will stick with me forever. Mike and only Mike would have the wisdom, real wisdom, to powerfully use this proverb to motivitate me for a lifetime. The Erkiletian family is in my prayers and always will be, just like Mike's proverb. Laurie Naismith

To the entire Erkiletian family, I am so sorry about the loss of Mike. He will always be in my heart and loved as though he was my family. My life is full of memories of Mike and all of you. To Stefanie, Michael, Alex, Mihran and Samuel, I love you all. Also my heart goes out to Margaret, Bea and Jackie (I have such fond memories of our times together). I wanted to be there in person but instead I am in spirit. Also, love to Josephine, Betty and of course Karen Wax, who is a big part of the family. Please give my love and prayers to everyone I and Kenny knew and loved. We will be able to give a small gift to Alliance for Chesapeake Bay, which is dear to us, in Mike's name. Mike and I met in 1964. We became close personal friends and business friends. Mike taught me about investing in real estate. Mike and I went hunting and skeet shooting together before he bought his farm on the eastern shore. He was my best friend. He was one of the most generous and finest people I know. I will sorely miss him.

During my service as Director of Commerce during Governor Robb's administration, I had no confidante who was wiser, more compassionate, more loyal or more brutally honest than Mike. He was a treasured friend and mentor. Virginia is a much better place today because of the work of this great man. His memory will live in the hearts of all who knew him and his accomplishments will benefit many generations to come.

I knew Mike for 22 years and he played a major role in my life and my carrier. He was a great man with a big heart, and an undying love for children.
He was a visionary creating beautiful buildings from an idea to realization. His buildings can be found throughout our area. He also possessed great character and was extremely proud of his Armenian heritage. He was particularly proud of the Kindergarten and Soup kitchen he founded and supported in Armenia.
Mike left behind a great family, and considered his employees as a second family. I will truly miss him.

To the Erkiletian Family,

Mike was more than just a client and friend to me. Yes, we had great times together working on deals, hunting, traveling and raising some hell. But most importantly, Mike was the most generous person, a great mentor and example to me over nearly thirty-five years. He was the primary reason I began my business fifteen (15) years ago.

I miss him every day!
