Shirley Ann Perry Carty, beloved daughter of Dr. Thurman McKinley Perry and Virginia Early Perry; wife of the late Colonel Robert Thomas Carty and former wife of Dr. James Lee McQueen, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, October 28, 2012 in the loving company of her three daughters, Shawna McQueen, Cristin Hassett-McQueen, and Peri Lyn Queen and other close family and friends.
Shirley corralled her energy and spirit until just the right moment, catching the front end of Hurricane Sandy's "Perfect Storm" to speed her way along to touch the essences of her closest friends and on to joyous infinity ever-lasting beyond. She will be forever remembered as a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Friend, Dancer, Performance Artist, Book and Art Lover, Poet, Writer, Painter, Potter, World Traveler, Collector, Progressive Thinker, Sister, Feminist, Activist, Thoughtful Listener and Counselor, and Breast Cancer Fighter and Survivor.
She is survived by her three daughters; her spirit-sister in cancer survival Cathy McQueen; brother Jack Perry; sons-in-law Craig Marcum and Michael Hassett-McQueen; grandchildren Chazalyn and Steve Salanik, Justin, Kelly and Melissa Queen, and Aidan Hassett-McQueen; great-grandchild Owen Salanik. She also leaves her gorgeous cat Honey.
Shirley's family welcomes your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers or other offerings, the family respectfully requests any donations be made to the Shirley P. Carty Memorial Fund at the Foundation. A memorial and celebration of Shirley's life will be held Sunday, November 18, 2012, 1 to 4 p.m. at One Circle Center, 3804 Littleton St., Silver Spring, MD 20906, 301-949-8984.
