CHARLES DUDLEY Obituary

CHARLES CHRISTOPHER DUDLEY "Chris"
Died Friday, November 23, 2012 at his home in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Mr. Dudley was born July 19, 1966, in Blairsville, Georgia, son of Charles and Larkin Dudley. A beloved son, father, and brother, Mr. Dudley grew up in Athens, Georgia and Blacksburg, Virginia with one sister, Drenan Dudley. He was formerly married to Deborah Hulsey Dudley, with whom he had one daughter, the love of his life, Mary Abigail Dudley. He graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1984 and Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Business in 1989. Mr. Dudley was Deputy Director for the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) since September 2009. A career U.S. Marshals Service employee, Mr. Dudley joined the agency as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in the Northern District of Georgia in 1990. He has held numerous positions within USMS, including Chief of Staff and Chief of Domestic Investigations, where he managed the fugitive task force program and the 15 Most Wanted Fugitive program. He was also assigned to the International Investigations Branch; served as Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal in the Washington, D.C., field office; and participated in numerous fugitive operations. He is former chair of the International Liaison Officers Association and a member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the U.S. Marshals Service Association, and the National Sheriffs Association.Chris loved soccer and fly fishing. He was a goalie for Blacksburg High School, goalie for two national collegiate championship teams for Clemson University, and coached soccer in Fairfax County, Virginia. He fished many of the trout streams that are such a part of the western Virginia mountains, an area he loved. He was known far and wide for leadership and humor and was a person of integrity, trusted by colleagues, friends, and neighbors. Of all the joys of his life, spending time with his daughter, Abby, was paramount. He is so loved and is being mourned by many. Mr. Dudley is survived by his daughter, Mary Abigail Dudley and her mother, Deborah Hulsey Dudley, Fairfax Station, Virginia; parents, Charles and Larkin Dudley, Blacksburg, Virginia; sister, Drenan Dudley, Arlington, Virginia; grandmother, Clara Dudley, Crawford, Georgia; uncle and aunt, Walter and Judy Dudley, Athens, Georgia; cousins, Scott Dudley and Dawn Smith and family; and a myriad of friends, former soccer team members, and the U.S. Marshal family. Two memorial services will be held. One in Alexandria, VA at the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 10:30am. The second service at Christ Episcopal Church, Church Street, Blacksburg, Virginia on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the U. S. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund are requested.

Today I remember fondly and once again miss my good friend and colleague Chris Dudley.  This year I find some small comfort in knowing that he is finally with both of his wonderful parents, Larkin and Jack. I continue to believe that by recalling the good memories he will never be forgotten and that at some point we will meet again. RJF II

I miss you, Boss. Still think of you often. You always had a word of encouragement, typically mixed with some self-deprecating humor, and your advice and counsel was always spot on.

I will continue to pray for your soul, and the family and friends you left behind.

Tomorrow will mark eleven years since we lost a wonderful son, brother, father, friend, collegiate athlete, federal law enforcement officer, agency senior executive, and all around great guy.  Many of us will never forget Chris regardless of how many years pass.  We each remember what he meant to us.  The USMS lost one of the best leaders it ever had.  It was becoming a better place to work because of his leadership.  I know that I will see him again.

On this 10th anniversary of losing a dedicated colleague and great friend, I will remember Chris, his wonderful sense of humor, and his loyalty to those he considered his friends. Some of us will never forget him, especially during the holiday season. Until we meet again, Chris will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I send warm best wishes to his Mom, Drenan, Abby and Deborah.

I can't let today pass without recalling the good times I shared with Chris. More than work colleagues, we were good friends. In the final years of my career, we served together as partners with a common goal of making our agency a better place than when we arrived. I respected Chris for how he approached each hurdle that we encountered. As the saying goes, "he was wise beyond his years." The way he treated people made it a joy to be around him. Those who knew him well will never let his memory fade as the years pass. Today my thoughts are with his family and I believe that he is with his Dad watching over those of us still making the journey.

I haven't written in a while. Not because I don't think of you often and miss your presence at work and at happy hours and when I'm down and need to pee my pants laughing (figuratively). Just because it so dam hard to accept even after all this time. I didn't want to retire with out you. We had plans!!!! And I'm less than two years from our target date and just wishing life turned a different direction on that day. no need for therapy for me. It's not about acceptance. It's just a fact. would do anything to repeat that day with all these people around you. Love and friends forever. Jolene

Wow !!
just found out of your passing away recently and I'm sorry to here that things turned out the way they did. I was proud to have you as my goalie during the first years ever of Blacksburg soccer. I fondly remember hanging out and listening to Bob Marley back in the day before most of the other kids knew who he was. I also remember all the laughs we had together on road trips with a close nit team that had forged the way for Soccer in a small town that had none at the travel and high school level. Everything that everyone has said about your amazing humor is true and I will never forget the passion you had for playing goalie. Hoe could I forget the the time I helped peel your lips of your braces after a huge save only to have you finish the game without even a second thought. Those and many more great memories!!
May you Rest In Peace old friend.

Thinking of you today, and most every day! I finally got my "flag" that you convinced me to go after, a long time ago. If not for you and your mentoring, it simply wouldn't have happened. You still inspire me to do my very best, yet to always be humble and kind.

JSD is the last remaining group left in the old building. A bit eerie at times. A memory of you washed over me out of the blue late one evening, last week. It drove me to go up to the empty and cold 12th floor and look out from your old office. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I did both.

You now have Pat in the fold with you, I am sure you'll have some good times with Saint Michael looking on. I am convinced that together you are leading the posse that keeps law and order in Heaven above.

Not a day goes by that I do not think of Chris as I start my work day and look at his photo. I am still so thankful for his support professionally and personally. Today, I was drawn to search for his story again, to read the notes of admiration and love, to pray for continued strength for his family, friends, and those in the USMS family that miss his humor, smile, and dedication to duty. The 12th floor just isn't the same without his laughter from around the corner.

My deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the Dudley family. Though I only knew your mother, Chris, she could not have been more proud to call you her son. She spoke highly of you and you played an instrumental part in her teaching career (and to many students in their learning and career paths as well). You were a leader and role model of what civil service should be. It is with great sadness that we lost a great soul on Earth, but may your family rest easy knowing you are in a better place now. When Chris was about 10 and Drenan and and I were about 5 he convinced us that if we stepped in the shiny oil slicks our feet would fall off. We totally believed him. Nowadays, when I tell my kids about the dangers of the shiny oil slicks, I think of Chris. I was so jealous Drenan had an older brother. Reading all these tributes, I know she has been lucky to have had such an awesome brother. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this terrible time. I hope you find solace in the good memories.

To Chris and his family,

My uncle Dennis told me he knew you when you guys were teenager. I'm sure you guys ran across each other at the family reunions my grandparents (Ed and Lois) put on. Those things were huge! Dennis had great things to say about you, and it's easy to see why from the things I've read. As a cousin and fellow law enforcement professional I wish I had the opportunity to meet you. May god be with you and your family.

Chris Dudley was one of the finest men I have ever known. There are really no words that can ever truly capture Chris' spirit and the qualities that he embodied. He was the gold standard of both friendship and leadership. He was a natural leader that had the rare ability to make people want to follow him, no matter where and no matter what lay ahead. His enthusiasm, charisma and empathy for others were boundless; people loved Chris because he loved them back.
Chris and I were colleagues, confidants, playful conspirators and, most of all, dear friends. We were kindred spirits that could usually find a way to make light of the most difficult situations and shared a passion for many of the same things in life. His passing has left a gaping hole in my heart that will be slow to heal and will leave an indelible scar, but I know that Chris would not want sadness and grief to be our legacy, so I will move forward, slowly at first, but with greater strength and intensity as time passes. Chris' end of watch came far too soon, but the memories of him will endure for eternity.I would trade all of the gold in Fort Knox for one more Dudley bear hug, belly laugh or even that familiar and reassuring “Hey Buuud” on the other end of the phone. Rest in peace, brother, I'll see you down the road.

December 3, 2012

I was the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's (GBI) Metro Fugitive Squad (MFS) supervisor during the 1990's. I was fortunate to obtain federal grant funds which allowed the unit to grow from five members from five law enforcement agencies to approximately thirty officers from sixteen LEO's. The USMS sent W. S. Robertson and John "Buck" Smith to work on USMS and I was never disappointed in their work product and all the assets they brought to MFS from the United States Marshals Service. WS and Buck brought several other Deputy Marshals to help in "pulling" on some of the badest outlaws in the metro Atlanta area and Chris was one of those other marshals. I always enjoyed being around Chris because he was always a fun loving cop that was very serious about the job we all had to do when we were on the streets looking for the badguys. Most of the people MFS officers arrested were ex-convicts that had been in and out of prisons and had made statements like....they will never take me alive....or, I'm not going back to prison. The GBI supervised Metro Fuigitve from the time that ASAC Bruce Pickett started it up in 1979 until the USMS took it over due to the state budget no longer being able to provide the funds for the unit. I was very pleased when the USMS took Metro over and to this day I wait with baited breath to hear that the USMS fugitive squad has gotten another outlaw off the streets of Atlanta where they cannot prey on the good citizens of Georgia. Chris was a very big party of doing this work as he got bumped up the ladder and I always enjoyed hearing about his advancements in the USMS....the greatest federal law enforcement agency there is. Chris will be missed by not only many federal law enforcement officers but also by many state and local officers and deputies that crossed his path in Georgia and many other states. RIP Brother....and God Bless your family.....Walt Brooks (retired GBI SAC)

What stands out to me as I read these messages is that so many of the words -- written by people I don't know personally, but whose lives Chris also touched -- are my words, too. Chris was my classmate, my spirit-lifter, my cheerleader, and my friend in the truest sense of the word. He accepted me as I was, for who I was. He was sweet, gentle, kind, funny, and genuine. I feel so very lucky to have known him, and so very grateful and proud to have called him my friend.

The outpouring of love for Chris and support for his family extended in these messages -- a reflection of what Chris gave all of us -- doesn't surprise me. What does amaze me, though, is how one person's heart could be big enough to generate and sustain the tremendous love, compassion, and generosity of spirit that Chris shared with so many.

What a remarkable legacy...and an everlasting gift.

A few words now will never express how we all feel at this time, but I will try. The highlight of my trips to HQ was seeing Chris and being invited up to his office to “just talk.” My HQ trips will never be the same knowing that I will not be visiting with Chris. The telephone calls and e-mails were also truly appreciated over the years. I will sincerely miss our talks, hearing from and seeing Chris.
