Jack was a wonderful friend and mentor. He made Washington understandable, attractive, and even addictive (imagine that!) to a wide-eyed newcomer. His passion, generosity, sense of humor, and big heart are my most enduring memories of him. He was a proud democrat of the small d, large D, and international varieties. He is sorely missed. Elaine, please accept my heartfelt thoughts and sympathy.

Elaine,

I was very sad to read about Jack. I recall our association fondly. It was very intense and we both thought of America's early days of democracy building as the stuff of history (an instinctive reaction by a couple of historians). I was thinking of you two just the other night because the last time I watched the Oscars was at your place nearly thirty years ago. I wish the three of us could have reminisced about shared glories and battles fought one more time.

Warmest regards,

Verne Newton
