FREDERICK J. CORNELIUS, JR.
It is with great sadness that the family of Frederick Joseph Cornelius, Jr. announces his passing on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the age of 80 years. Fred was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1955. It is there where he met his sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Mary Joan. He served as an Air Force Pilot with the 526th Fighter/Interceptor Squadron based out of Ramstein, Germany from 1955 - 1959. In 1966, Fred and his family moved to Potomac, Maryland. He remained in the Air Force Reserves until 1970. Fred spent most of his career as a Director at the National Wildlife Federation, retiring in 2002. For the last 10 years, he was a dedicated docent at the National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. He was an active member of the F86 Sabre Pilots Association. He was beloved by everyone he met and will be remembered as a strong, caring, loving husband, father, and grandfather. Fred will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Joan and his children, Judith Marie (Gerald) Turcott, Frederick Joseph (Maria) Cornelius III, Gregory Richard (Dawn) Cornelius, Elizabeth Ann (Gregory) Nairn, and Marcus Jude Cornelius. Fred will also be fondly remembered by his eight beautiful grandchildren, Genevieve, Patrick, Claire, Michael, Anna, Rachel, Jacob and A.J., and by his siblings, Joan (Robert) David, Paul (Charlotte) Cornelius, and Mary (Mike) Shelton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Jane Frances de Chantal, 9601 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, Maryland on Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN. Please sign family
