Born in New Orleans LA on June 28, 1930, died on March 5, 2013 at Suffield House, where she was a resident since June of 2010. Her parents Dr. Ruffin Perkins and Catharine Churchill Perkins, and brothers Dale Perkins and Neil Perkins predeceased her. She is survived by her sister, Hephzibah Perkins Crawford of Louisville, Kentucky; her husband of sixty years, Frank G. Stewart of Windsor CT; their three children, Laura Stewart Cipriano and her husband Paul of Windsor CT, Eric Stewart and his wife Mary of Arlington VA, and David Stewart of Alexandria VA; and beloved grandchildren Catharine and David Cipriano of Windsor, CT.
Effie's father was a surgeon for the Veterans' Administration, assigned to hospitals in Alexandria, LA, Washington DC, Lake City FL, and Dayton OH. Some of Effie's elementary education and all of her secondary education took place in Dayton OH. Effie earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Newcomb College of Tulane University. She was employed as a graphic artist and, after her children were in secondary school, she became employed in the graphics industry, first as a proofreader and later in quality control. She retired from CIGNA in 1996.
Effie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and wife. She was scrupulously honest and always considerate of the feelings and needs of others. She found beauty in everything, plants, insects, art, and music and she had a fascination with word origins and meanings. She was an enthusiastic gardener and an advocate for birds and animals, and for human rights and peace.
