WILLIAM MOBERG BENSON  

William Moberg Benson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away March 25, 2013 at the age of 89 in Rockville, MD. Born in Phillipsburg, PA, he was the son of the late James Carl Benson and Anna Aurora Moberg Benson. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, James Carl Benson, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Payne Benson; two sons, Kurt Andrew Benson and wife, Sandra of Cleveland, TN and William Craig Benson and wife, Jessica of Glen Allen, VA; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Benson received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg; the Robert Burns Lodge, No. 464 of Harrisburg, PA; and the Scottish Rite Free Masonry, Valley of Washington, Orient of the District of Columbia.
His professional career took him from teaching at The Penn State University to Pensacola Community College, FL, where he received the Teacher of the Year Award and later became Assistant Registrar. He then moved to Key West as Registrar and helped start Florida Keys Community College. In 1966 he came to Montgomery College as Registrar of the Takoma Park and Rockville Campuses. He later moved into academic administration and became an Associate Academic Dean, Rockville Campus. Before retiring in 1986 he returned to teaching History and Political Science on the Takoma Park Campus.
After retiring he did volunteer work and traveled extensively. Services will be held in Georgia. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the or to the Montgomery College Foundation, 40 West Gude Drive, Rockville, MD 20850.
