I am deeply saddened to have just learned of Bob's passing. He was a wonderful and dedicated man, and I remember his compassion and sense of humor (twinkle in the eye) to this very day. When I was just out of college, Amb.Robert Smith took a chance and hired me back in 1985 when he was Executive Director of the African Wildlife Foundation. We all worked hard back in those days to conserve Africa's wildlife, and the work continues to this day. I learned a great deal from Amb. Smith, and I wanted the family to know how very sorry I am for their loss. I will never forgot his kindness to me as I was just starting out on my career path. My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Bob. He was such a wonderful person, and I so admired the very special relationship that he had with his lovely wife, DEEDEE. Bob was extremely accomplished. We will all miss him. My deepest sympathy, to you, DeeDee.

What a warm, thoughtful, gracious and kind man Bob was. He and Didi were the rocks I clung to in the most difficult time in my life. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but hope he knows that he left the world a better place for his having been here. Ernestine Heck

Bob was a memorable person, funny, warm, smart, sensitive
and NOT at all stuffy. I could never think of him as 'the
Ambassador' but knew that this was one of his many
accomplishments! He will be missed but never forgotten.
