SMYTH ILENE SHARON SMYTH (nee FIVENSON) Ilene Smyth, age 77 years, passed away on September 24, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cadillac, Michigan on June 18, 1936 to the late Oscar and Lillian (Hellerman) Fivenson. Ilene grew up in Cadillac and graduated from Cadillac High School in 1954. As a teenager, she spent her summers teaching swimming lessons at Cadillac Community Beach and Rose Lake Girl Scout Camp. She went on to study at Michigan State University where she earned Bachelors of Science degree in History in 1958. While living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ilene worked at the Michigan Museum of Archeology and the Michigan Department of Epidemiology. Ilene continued her studies in Library Science at the University of Michigan. In 1962, Ilene moved to Columbia, Missouri where two of her children were born (Susan Kuper and Michael Lash). While living in Missouri, she took classes in Art at Columbia College. Ilene also lived in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for several years before moving to Rockville, Maryland in 1969 and then to Bethesda, Maryland where she lived for over 40 years. In 1973, Ilene and Jack Smyth joined their respective families into one and her family grew with the addition of Jack's children, Mark, Matthew, and Melonee. Ilene was very active in the PTA organizations at the children's schools at all levels. She was an assistant leader in her daughters' Girl Scout Troops and was active in the League of Women Voters. In the late 1980s, Ilene and her husband Jack, became avid ballroom dancers. They took regular lessons and, until just recently, danced the ballroom circuit around Montgomery County (MD) and more. Ilene is survived by her loving husband, Jack Smyth, her children, Mark (Sheila) Smyth, Susan (Steve) Kuper, Matthew Smyth (Karina), Michael Lash, and Melonee (Rick) Noll; her grandchildren, Brandy, Julie, Toby, Jimmy, Andy, Alexandra, David, Dakota, Felicia, Zachary, Andrea, Nicolas, Lindsey, and Lisa and several great and great great grandchildren in her extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Henry of NY and CA, and brother, Louis Fivenson of Cadillac, MI. Her marriage to Leonard Lash ended in divorce. A local gathering of family and friends will be Friday, September 27, 2013, from 4:30-6:00 PM at the Lutheran Church at 12801 Falls Road (at Wootton Parkway) Rockville, MD 20854, http://www.lccrockville.org/ (please use the back entrance to reception room). A family burial will be in Bay City, MI, followed by a remembrance service in her home town of Cadillac, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you sign your organ donor card.
