FITZHUGH SAMUEL Obituary

FITZHUGH GORDON SAMUEL (Age 21)
Died suddenly and unexpectedly on December 4, 2013 at Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Fitz was a 2010 graduate of J.E.B. Stuart High School in Fairfax County, VA and a senior at Longwood University in Farmville, VA at the time of his death. He was in the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program majoring in theater technology and stage management - a high school passion he chose to pursue as a professional. Fitz was an Eagle Scout and earned his Eagle rank while a member of Troop 875 in Falls Church, VA. Fitz was much beloved by his friends and family. He was respected and well-liked by his school department, both faculty and classmates. Fitz completed a theater technology internship in the 2013 summer at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport, Long Island, and it was truly a high point in his life - a wonderful summer of work, learning, companionship, and achievement.  Survivors include his parents Cliff and Libby (Hamilton) Samuel; brother Rollo; and grandparents Gordon and Mickey Hamilton and Robert Samuel. There will be a memorial service for Fitz at the Unitarian/Universalist Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA, on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Stage Theatre at Tyson's Corner where Fitz used to volunteer as a budding young stage technician. Please send your donations in memory of Fitz Samuel to 1st Stage Theatre, P.O. Box 938, McLean, VA 22102-0384. Donations can also be made online at: http://www.1ststagetysons.org/getinvolved.html.

Libby, Cliff and family, I am so sorry for your loss.

"Safely Home

I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely Home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh, but Jesus' love illuminated Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's Will.

There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth--You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come."

Libby, Cliff & Rollo,

I did not know Fitz personally (briefly introduced via Libby) but I feel as if I knew him via stories from Libby. I am deeply saddened to hear of his death and your loss and wish you peace during this tough time in all of your lives. I am sorry I will be unable to make the service.

Dear Libby, Cliff and Rollo,

We share with you many precious memories of little Fitz and our little girl playing together, exploring, swimming and having fun. Two very blond heads side by side. Fitz was a perfect gentleman already back then, in every way. Rather than saying to our daughter she pronounced his name wrong, Fitz told people his name was 'Pitzi'. Thanks to Rollo's patient coaching, this phase passed quickly.

Since the sad news reached us, you have been, are and will be in our prayers. May His peace be with you, now and always.

Fitz was always a welcome visitor to our home and spent many a day playing in our basement with Ben, Rollo and the rest of their friends. Laughter, loud voices and the occasional disagreement was the normal routine. Leaving a sock, glove or jacket was just a part of Fitz coming by.
Libby....Cliff....you must have thought your washer had the largest appetite in the world.
Thank you for leaving us with so many fond memories Fitz, we'll keep them close to our hearts.

Even through all your shenanigans and your obnoxious humor, your honesty and the way you were so protective of your friends was much appreciated. You have my respect. I always liked how I could say the most unguarded things to you, there are just some people who are easy to talk to because you know that they'll answer with good nature. Proud to have been your friend. Rest easy.

Fitz always had a big smile on his face and was so caring of those around him. He was especially compassionate with his younger cousins at Thanksgiving, all of whom looked up to him. May he rest peacefully.
