Inis Claude was a superb teacher. One always left his classroom feeling better off for having been there. He was patient with his students which was part of the way that he cultivated their learning and participation. His wit and ready smile were engaging traits. I was blessed to have remained in correspondence with him until shortly before his passing. With everlasting gratitude, Keith Lepak UVa PhD 1986

I just found out that Inis died - too late to attend the memorial where I would have loved to have been. I came down to UVA in 1982 to pursue a Ph.D. after ten years of practicing law in Washington. Inis's class in international organizations was one of the first classes I took, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and made much use of it later when I taught my own courses in international law. I was fortunate not just to be in his class but to become friends with him and Marie. I remember one particularly wonderful time in 1999 when I was at UVA on sabbatical from Arizona where I was teaching at the time, and I had a dinner with Inis and Marie and my law mentor and his wife George and Marjorie Chandler. I wish I had a recording of the conversation that took place that night. Inis and George both got an enormous amount of pleasure out of the English language and finding clever ways to use it. The best examples of that is probably Inis's wonderful essay on the Dead C+ Scrolls.
He and Marie were always great fun to be with, and I don't think I have ever known a more contented couple. Being without her these last few years was very difficult for him. I will never forget them and am so thankful to have had them in my life.

Professor Claude's soaring wit and twinkling eye were gifts to everyone, including my parents, who enjoyed inis and Marie's company and camaraderie in Ann Arbor, where the Grassmuck and Claude kids became friends. Deepest condolences to Susan, Bob and Kathy. Please look us up if you are ever in the D.C. Area. God's peace.

As one of Inis' students from his Michigan days, I am deeply saddened to learn of his death. I last visited him in spring 2012 and, as always, enjoyed some wonderful conversation. He has had a powerful influence on my thinking throughout the years of my own career and it is striking how frequently his "Swords" book is still cited. My deepest sympathy to all of Inis' family.

Mr. Claude was a wonderful professor and person. I can still hear his cheerful wit as he probed theories of international relations with us in grad school. His writing and lectures were models of his craft. I was so fortunate to have his advice on my dissertation. His kindnesses to a grad student / recent grad extended to bringing me to lunch after the dissertation defense, writing marvelous letters of recommendation, inviting us to his home for discussions, visiting us at Villanova University to give a lecture, and always taking the time to explore ideas with us in his captivating way. He remains a model to emulate.
